Roots blowers are inefficient since they are essentially air pumps, while centrifugal and screw (like Whipple) superchargers function as compressors. This inefficiency results in more heat. Fortunately, if you have access to an unlimited supply of cold water, air-to-water intercooling can effectively address this issue.

For large cubic inch applications that don't operate at extremely high RPMs, a Whipple supercharger is more suitable compared to a centrifugal one. Centrifugal superchargers are better suited for very high RPM applications.

For instance, a typical boat with a large cubic inch engine that redlines under 6,000 RPM would benefit more from a Whipple supercharger. However, a turbocharger would be an even better choice since it results in less horsepower loss due to the absence of a driving belt. With turbos, you can run lower boost while achieving the same power levels. Unlike a centrifugal supercharger that can consume up to 80 horsepower just to run, turbos are more efficient.

Although turbocharger setups tend to be more complex and expensive, they are a superior solution for forced induction applications. The complexity and cost usually arise from the lack of standardization, as installations would vary across different boats. In contrast, superchargers offer more standardized kits, making them a more cost-effective option. If I were to build a custom effort with no budget constraints, I would opt for a turbo setup.
