Need advise on upgrading machine to twist steel



I have a commercially made twisting machine- a Mercedes compared to your Model T. And it cost close to 15 grand, new. Now of course, there was some profit in the whole deal, but there are also real material and manufacturing costs that you just cant get away without.

Anyway- I would go with a very big motor, and a gear reducer.
My machine is about 5hp, but gear reduced down to 14rpm.
The torque at this speed is unbelievable- I can easily snap a piece of 1" square stainless if I overtwist.

The big homemade machines I have seen, at various blacksmiths shops, usually have at least a 5hp motor. I know Al Paley had a machine at one point that was either 15hp or 25 hp, and old very low speed elevator motor.
Then they add gear reduction, to get the speed down below 20 rpm.
If you could find a cheap used 3 phase 1000 rpm or 700 rpm motor, that might be a good start.
Belt and pulley speed reduction is just too inefficient for this- you need a gear reducer.

Then, I think something beefier than a 6" I beam would be required. I used to buy from a shop in LA that sold 20 footers of 1/2" square that they twisted cold- and they had a 12" I beam for that, along with a good 10 hp and a truck tranny. And it would not do 3/4", much less 1".

My machine has a box frame made of thick square tubing, with heavy plate welded to it, the top plate is about 1" thick, so it really resists racking.
I can torque an I beam with my 24" crescent wrench- the profile is just not designed to resist racking, only vertical loads.
You could box it, I suppose, like old hot rodders used to, by welding flat plate on each side- that would stiffen it.

The other thing that is really nice, besides just pure torque, is a motor brake- mine is programmable to 1 degree increments, so you can stop it on a dime, and twist exactly what you want and no more.

Here are some twists I have been doing on mine lately- machined first, then twisted hot, stainless steel, mostly 1" or 1 1/4" material.
