To create CRs lawn mower and tractor ratings, our testers and engineers travel in late winter to Florida to test new models on grounds we specially prepare each year. We plant 1,800 pounds of grass seed (predominantly annual rye, prized for its dense growth). Then we put the mowers to work, cutting 500,000 square feet of grass using three modes: mulching, side discharging, and bagging (accumulating a total of 3,000 pounds of clippings). We cut both level turf and slopes to get a feel for how each and every model handles the terrain. We also review each units convenience features.

In our book, a mower that works well now but conks out in a year or two doesntahemcut it. So the Overall Score for each lawn mower and tractor in Consumer Reports ratings incorporates not only its test performance data but also predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings from our latest member surveys. These surveys, fielded in the fall of , , and , leverage data on more than 36,500 lawn mowers and tractors that members purchased between and .
Our tests show that you dont have to pay top dollar to get a great mower or tractor. The price difference between our top-scoring machines can be as large as thousands of dollars. But our tests also show that paying just a little more can often buy a lot more mower, especially at the lower end of the price spectrum.

I understand Zero turns are out because they are easily tipped over on a hill like this.

I've wondered about that /\"tractor" type mowers seem to be rated for steeper inclines then zero turn mowers but ZT's typically have a lower center of gravity so you think it would be better not worse for hills? I'm assuming they are referring to going straight up the incline and the ZT's have the rear mounted engines so maybe that's the issue but going side to side on an incline, you would think a ZT would be little less likely to roll?I too am looking at buying a rider and the ZT seems like the best for my needs but I do have one small section of my yard that has 30-32deg slope and I'm not sure if that will be doable with a ZT? My neighbor has a similar incline (if not steeper) and I've seen his lawn service guy cut it with a ZT (going up and down the incline, not side to side)
