How to Choose Interactive Whiteboards for the Classroom

In an age where interactive whiteboards and projection systems have become commonplace in the classroom, advancing technology is driving this area to new heights.

It’s important your interactive whiteboard helps students achieve learning goals by promoting critical thinking and keeping students engaged in lessons. The challenge is choosing the right one for you and your students. Here are our top tips for buying the best interactive whiteboards for your classroom.

1. Size and Design

Flat panel interactive whiteboards suitable for most classrooms range from 55” to 98”, with the most popular sizes being between 65” and 84”. The size of the room should dictate the screen size. The screen should be large enough for students at the back of the class to easily read a 20pt font.

Weights range from 38kg to over 100kg, so logistics for installation and feasibility of wall mounting should be carefully considered for safety reasons.

Besides size, check for multi-touch points and active projection dimensions. Resolution is another crucial attribute. The whiteboard's operating system must also be selected with attention to detail.

2. Resolution is Key

The resolution defines the sharpness and clarity of any visual panel by the number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical axes. Higher resolution means sharper and crisper images.

In today’s environment, nothing less than standard High Definition (1920 x 1080) should be considered. Some interactive whiteboards are now available in Ultra High Definition, known as 4K (3840 x 2160). For example, our IQ Board Interactive Whiteboards Series are all 4K resolution.

3. Lifespan

It's always worth knowing the expected lifespan of the interactive panels you’re considering along with the warranty terms.

Our advice is to dismiss any vendor offering less than a 3-year warranty.

4. Touch Function

One of the main reasons to buy an interactive whiteboard is for the touch functionality.

You'll need at least two touch points to pinch or zoom an image if using the panel alone. However, for collaborative work, you need many more interactive touch points.

Most interactive touch screens offer 6 or 10 simultaneous touch points. We recommend considering screens with at least 6 touchpoints.

5. The Driving Force

Clearly define how you intend to use your interactive panel, what classroom software you need, and which PC or laptop you will require. Select a panel that offers adequate input and output connections.

Reputable manufacturers provide 2 or more HDMI inputs, a VGA input, Component, AV, and PC audio inputs, along with at least one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port for easy device connectivity.

6. The Sound

Most panels include integrated speaker systems, although some might be unsuitable for a large classroom. It’s common to find panels with only 2 x 10-watt rear-facing speakers.

However, front-facing speakers offer better volume and sound quality. Additional sound bars are also available, integrating nicely under most interactive panels, further improving sound quality and volume levels.

7. Software

The interactive whiteboard comes equipped with software designed to deliver different teaching-learning experiences. Software supporting touch and stylus pen is used for group discussions, forming digital narratives, lessons on specific topics, real-time lessons, and presentations. It can accommodate different learning styles in the classroom.

8. Multi-student Participation

For more collaboration and interaction, consider an interactive whiteboard that allows multiple students to interact with the projected media. Multi-student participation enables group work and presentations, enhancing lesson plans and increasing student engagement.
