The Ankylosaurus (an-KYE-low-SAWR-us), also referred to as the Ankylo or Anky, is a medium-sized, herbivorous dinosaur known for its ability to harvest large amounts of Metal and other resources as well being able to carry metal at a greatly-reduced weight. It was first added in ARK: Survival Evolved on its early release.
This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.
“
Unlike many of the herd animals on the Island, Ankylosaurus crassacutis tends to live in small family units.
I believe they can afford to stick with smaller groups because of their incredibly thick skin, for which they're named.
Despite not being among the largest of the Island's herbivores, Ankylosaurus is one of the more difficult creatures to take down. Its thick, armored skin seems to make it more than a match for several of the mid-sized predators that would otherwise hunt it.
Reckless carnivores are just as likely to hurt themselves on Ankylosaurus' spikes, as they are to get hit by its tail.
Without a doubt, the best trait of a trained Ankylosaurus is its enormously dense tail.
This tail is powerful enough to quickly shatter the resource-laden rocks of the Island.
One of the wealthier human tribes on the island utilizes a squad of Ankylosaurs in its mines and quarries. The creature's affinity for metal enables it to carry raw ore at an effectively reduced weight.

Ankylosaurus can be found peacefully wandering around the Island. They will not attack unless provoked, and since they can deal a devastating blow with their tail club if angered, survivors should leave this beast alone. They have a very low movement speed on land but can move significantly faster in water.
Ankylosaurus is a species of medium, quadrupedal herbivore that inhabits the ARKs. Its skin is adorned with a thick coating of spikes, bony plates, osteoderms, and fused bone. The head has plentiful spikes, as well as a beak at the tip of the mouth and enlarged nasals. They are relatively low to the ground with short legs and a low head; they protect themselves by wielding a wicked club on the end of their muscular tails. The only region not covered with body armour is the belly.

This section displays the Ankylosaurus's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Ankylosaurus. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Ankylosaurus will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.
This information can be used to alter the Ankylosaurus's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance,
cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Ankylosaurus's "back" magenta.
Variants
Aberrant Ankylosaurus
Aberrant Ankylosaurus is a tameable aberrant variant of Ankylosaurus found in Aberration. It is identical to the normal Ankylosaurus except for its glowing robe. It is not Radiation immune.
X-Ankylosaurus
X-Ankylosaurus is a tameable X variant of Ankylosaurus found in the volcanic biome of Genesis: Part 1. It sports a lava-like crusty back and has a 5% × Melee Damage increase at the exchange of 3% × Health reduction. On official servers, its level cap is 500.
Like all X-Creatures on Genesis: Part 1, wild X-Ankylosaurus additionally have a 250% damage increase and a 60% damage reduction from players and tamed creatures.

Base Stats and Growth
- For a comparison of the stats of all creatures, see Base Creature Statistics.
- For an explanation of exactly how the levelup calculation works, see Creature Stats Calculation.
- These are the base speeds of the tamed creature at 100% Movement Speed, i.e. without a possible taming bonus.
- These are the speeds of the creature once tamed, including a possible taming bonus and no imprinting bonus.
- For a comparison of the speeds of all creatures, see Base Creature Speeds.
Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.
Abilities
Active
- Tail Swing: The Ankylo swings its tail doing 50 damage. This attack harvests rocks and trees for its resources. Can be used every 1.16s by both a rider and the AI.
- Bite: The Ankylo bites in front of it for 30 damage. This attack only harvests bushes for its resources. Can be used every 0.67s by both a rider and the AI.
Passive
Auto-Harvest Resources: The Ankylosaurus auto-harvests the metal rocks that it has in front of it whenever it has no rider and its Weight capacity is below 50%.
Taming
For general info about domesticating a wild creature, see Taming.
KO Strategy
Ankylosaurus is relatively easy to knock out due to its slow movement speed. Even when attacked, the Ankylosaurus is easy to outrun, making nearly any ranged attack effective. The best method to knock it out would be using Tranquilizer Darts, Tranq Spear Bolts, or Tranquilizer Arrows, but if neither are available then a simple Slingshot will do the trick but may take longer than a tranquilizer dart or arrow. The Ankylosaurus does not receive increased damage on headshots due to the heavy armor that covers its body.
Taming Food
Note that the values are for optimal cases, always bring extra supplies! For a level-dependent count of resources needed, try an external taming calculator.

Combat
This section describes how to fight against the Ankylosaurus.
General
The Ankylosaurus uses its huge, literally 'bone-crushing' tail to attack its enemies. Its attack can be quite devastating if a survivor is wearing anything weaker than Chitin Armor. It is recommended then to either shoot it with a Ranged Weapon or use a Pike or Spear while circling it.
Strategy
The most successful strategy for killing an Ankylosaurus is to circle it while shooting it with a ranged weapon like a Bow, Crossbow, or any variety of gun. Be prepared for a moderately lengthy battle if you are using low-level weapons.
Weaponry
Ranged weapons are recommended when fighting an Ankylosaurus. These weapons include Bow, Crossbow, Longneck Rifle, and others, though with some persistence a Slingshot will also work. Melee weapons are generally discouraged, though more nimble survivors might have success using Pikes and Metal Sword if they can quickly move in and out of its attack range, or even bringing a Shield can work as well.
Dangers
The Ankylosaurus uses its huge tail club as a defensive weapon: this attack has a fairly large range and can deal a respectable amount of damage, so keeping your distance is a must.
Weakness
Much like Carbonemys, your avatar's backwards movement will outpace the dinosaur whilst the player stabs it to death. Be aware that Ankylosaurus does more damage than Carbonemys.
Utility
Roles
- Combatant/Guardian: The Ankylo is an excellent tank due to its high HP, low posture, and compact build. Along with high health for its size, the Ankylo is very powerful with its bite and tail swing attacks, the latter doing the most damage; both of these attacks have great AOE and knockback as well. These two factors can be quite useful when used to take damage from bullets and attack creatures in relatively small spaces where other heavy-built tames can not reach, and its slow speed no longer becomes an issue, making them decent base defense dinos as well as decent cave raiding dinos. (Level up Health and Melee Damage)
- Transport: While slow, it has a very good base carrying capacity and is quite powerful. One notable thing to mention is that the Ankylo significantly increases its speed when swimming compared to running on land, moving by or near water sources is most optimal for this task. Good for local transport but not recommended for long-distance travel unless being transported by a flyer or other carrying method. (Level up Movement Speed, Stamina, and Weight)
- Gatherer: The Ankylo excels at gathering as it can harvest most materials (with few exceptions, such as Fiber which cannot be harvested by it) from trees, rocks, and bushes. As it is one of the best viable ways of harvesting rocks and ores, the Ankylo is excellent for collecting essential materials such as Metal, Crystal, Obsidian, and Flint. As of patch 256.3 (PC) Ankylos have an 85% weight reduction to raw metal in their inventories, allowing them to carry much more before becoming encumbered. (Level up Weight and Melee Damage). It is important to note that the corpse of a Rock Elemental can also be harvested by an Ankylo for huge amounts of valuable materials. They also have the added benefit of being able to be transported by creatures including Quetzals or an Argentavis for greatly increased capability and mobility. (Level up Melee Damage on the Ankylosaurus and Weight on the flyer/carrier). The Ankylo is competent at harvesting large quantities of Berries as well with its RmbLmb Thatch and Wood in moderate quantities. It can be set to “wander” to harvest resources automatically.
- Underwater Miner: Despite being such a heavily built creature, Ankylosaurus is a surprisingly good swimmer and also capable of easily fending off sea predators with its tail club attack, since it can move while swinging its tail, making it more dangerous in the water than on land. Therefore, it can be used to gather Oil from the bottom of the sea while easily fending off the most common sea creatures. Leveling up Oxygen also makes it swim much faster. (Level up Oxygen and Stamina, as well as Weight and Melee Damage if desired.)
- Clearing / Landscaping: Thanks to its rather large AOE and a little trick that involves using the tail wing attack immediately after using the bite attack to clear plants in a large radius, the Ankylo is perhaps the best creature to use when a large area needs to be cleared to make way for buildings, siege weapons, artillery, war mounts, battlefield, a racetrack, or any other purpose that would need to involve large swaths of trees and rocks to be chopped down or broken. Because the Ankylo can harvest almost any object in the game, they are perfectly fit for this role.
- Caving mount: Owing to its small stature, high knockback, health, and wide AOE, the Ankylo makes a great option for caves that are often overlooked. Its disadvantages such as speed and turning are mitigated by the tight tunnels of the Ark's cave systems. A general strategy for the cave Ankylo is level mainly damage to support a kind of "one-two punch combo." Said combo is a bite and a tail swing, resulting in all nearby creatures being knocked away from the Anky, as well as high damage in a short period.
Weight Reduction
The Ankylosaurus reduces the weight of the following resources by the listed amount while they are in its inventory:
- Metal: 85%
Collectibles
- Note: increasing Melee Damage on Ankylosaurus yields more resources per swing; however, it does not increase the area of effect as rumored.
