American Red Cross Blackout Buddy The Emergency LED ...

This light works as described. It turns off when the lights are on, and turns on when it is dark, unplugged or the power is out. There is also and off switch.

It only takes up one outlet.

It is bright enough to light up my entire kitchen, and dimly light the hall and my living room. I can walk down the hall, make a sandwich, find the tv remote and go back to bed with just this light. It is probably too bright for bedroom use *at first*.

*Year and a half later update*

I bought a second one of these to put in another room. I didn't realize how much dimmer this has become. The new one is so much brighter. I have since moved the old one to a bedroom because it just isn't bright enough.

The sensor on this did not turn off when my CFL light was on. However when I got LED bulbs that were k "daylight", the sensor was able to detect it and turn off the light

I am including a picture of my old backup light, and new one for brightness comparison.

Using my Kill A Watt meter this uses .3 watts when fully charged and .4 when it needs to charge the battery. Both my new one and old light use the same amount of power. Turning on or off of the flashlight part doesn't seem to effect the power draw.
